Make HEALTH Your HOBBY!

mom and child
So for those of you rolling your eyes at me right now, hear me out!  This will (hopefully) inspire you 😆 .  Let me start off with a little story that STILL has me floating (and gloating!).  A few days ago, my teenage daughter ACTUALLY said this to me!  “Mom, I wish I could devote a whole week to just feeling great and working on my health!  I’d work out every day with you, maybe do two boxing classes a week – and on top of THAT, still go for walks, hikes and bicycle rides and run – and every meal would be perfectly healthy and energizing.”  …..something like that!  (I may have embellished the “with you” part when she said she’d work out every day…… ).  Anyway, needless to say, I was THRILLED!  And did I mention that I was thrilled?  Just checking.  I LOVE that I don’t have to be too preachy with my kids (even though THEY’RE probably reading this and rolling their eyes in disagreement!).  They SEE me chugging aloe vera, whipping up black bean brownies, trying that new kale recipe or a new work out class – and that I enjoy seeking out and indulging in opportunities to up the anti with my health.  READ ON! It’s fascinating!  😉 ….

Crazy Delicious and Clever “Recipes”….

pancakesg
So the reason I put recipes in quotes (up top) is because it’s TOO SIMPLE to call this an actual recipe.  However, it IS clever, if I do say so myself!  Personally, I like to keep my protein high and my carbs, fat and calories LOW.  There are so many foods I’ve pretty much avoided over the years with this philosophy in mind!  I used to LOVE pancakes and waffles, so I decided to experiment with my protein powder (I alternate between two: Vega Very Vanilla and Nutiva Hemp Protein, which is why my pancakes are green 😯 )  So here is how easy it is to turn your protein powder into pancakes or waffles and WRAPS! And then stay tuned for the most AMAZING GREEN SMOOTHIE EVER EVER EVER!!!!!  (And you MUST message me after you try it cuz I’m dying to hear your reactions!!!) 😀  Continue reading Crazy Delicious and Clever “Recipes”….

Passover Bagels/Donuts – TO DIE FOR! AND They’re Healthy”ish”!

dogels

What do you call a cross between a bagel and a donut?  A DOGEL!  I can honestly tell you, these are “to-die-for”!  My kids actually beg me to make these even when it’s NOT Passover.   These delicacies are the first to disappear at my seders.  I don’t know about you, but I cannot stand matzo – and dogels are the yummiest alternative!  AND YOU DO NOT HAVE TO CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAY OF PASSOVER TO ENJOY THESE!!  Each year I make batches for my sisters’ families (and used to make for my parents too).  I PROMISE you, you will LOVE these and thank me!  SO, I’ll give you the recipe, (with a vegan and whole-grain option as well), and some nutrition numbers too.  These are very easy to make!  You can leave out the ‘sugar’ and it’s more of a bagel.  And lastly, thank you to my mother-in-law, Sondy Burg, who introduced me to these YUMSTERS!!!  Here goes…  They will NOT disappoint 😎 ….. Foods Disguised As Healthy, But ….. SUCK!

arches

I recently received a comment/question (which I’ll post below for you to read) from a reader (Amy) about my last blog on carrageenan – and I think it’s definitely worth expanding on.  Like Amy, I drank almond milk because for ME, it was a better alternative than milk.  If I want calcium, there are far better AND SAFER options than cow’s milk.

In my studies thru Cornell, I came across the dangers of carrageenan.  Being the avid nutrition-label-reader that I am, I FREAKED when I realized that carrageenan is one of the ingredients in my almond milk.  Needless to say, I dumped it and have fortunately found other brands that do NOT tout carrageenan as one of their ingredients.  But this lead me to panic a bit because WHAT ELSE am I ingesting while thinking I’m doing my body good?!  So here goes… my upward spiral to weeding out unsafe ingredients that the food industry has so cleverly disguised as healthy!  Continue reading Foods Disguised As Healthy, But ….. Do You Take Your Milk WITH or WithOUT Carrageenan?

milk

A heads up!  If you drink almond milk, you may (no, you DEFINITELY) want to check the ingredients to be sure that carrageenan is NOT listed on there!  If you already know this, stop reading here.  But if you don’t, you must know this because it is such a harmful additive and it can SO easily be avoided! Strategies For A Pig Out ….. And No Judging!

1403015634_khloe-kardashian-article

Last week I received an email from a reader asking me if I’d do a blog on how I handle food cravings and that urge to pig out.  She didn’t think it was funny when I said “I handle it by pigging out”.  The truth of the matter is, sometimes I DO.  I’m human.  Ya gotta let yourself indulge, like REALLY indulge – once in a while – and NOT beat yourself up.  It’s a slippery slope.  Personally, when I feel that I’ve totally screwed up and have fallen SO low, it’s easy for me to keep going and say “what’s the use? I’ve already screwed up!”.  Can you relate?  The outcome will be so much better though if you give yourself a freakin break!  Indulge!  And then say, “I’m done. I really enjoyed that.  Now back to my healthier ways.”.

But what about those times when you’re on the edge, you haven’t caved YET – and you’re REALLY craving something that you know is SO not good for you?  Well, I DO have some strategies that I use, and I’d LOVE to hear YOURS!!!  Here’s the rule though.  Don’t beat me up for my game plans cuz what works for me may not be for you.  (And some of my tactics may definitely rub you the wrong way.) With that said, here goes: Continue reading Strategies For A Pig Out ….. And No Judging!

Candy Bar or GINORMOUS Salad? Hmmm! (Some Fun Comparisons.)

Hershey

A lot of people who I work with seem to know a lot about nutrition already. Those are by far my easiest clients – because they just GET IT!  So currently I’m working with a gentleman who is trying to lose about 80 pounds and get off of his diabetes medications. The other day he confessed to me that when he gets hungry in the middle of the day, he will run down (to the lobby shop in his office building) and grab a Hershey’s candy bar. “Wait. You’re telling me that when you feel hungry, a candy bar is your go-to answer?”  Of course I said this as unemotionally as possible, but when I heard a very intelligent, well-educated man say he does something that I just assumed everyone KNOWS is a no-no, a light went off in my head.  I hope he couldn’t read the cartoon over my head, but it read “THANKS DUDE!  GREAT BLOG TOPIC!”

With that, here are some very interesting food comparisons, just for fun!  Ready?  Kay, here goes: Continue reading Candy Bar or GINORMOUS Salad? Hmmm! (Some Fun Comparisons.)

Cool Way To Test For IODINE Deficiency! (Your kids Will Think You’re A FREAK!)

heart-mom-anchor-tattoo-on-arm

Here’s a quick, cool little FYI for ya on your Friday morning!   Wanna know a very cool way to test to see if you’re iodine levels are at a healthy place?  Go buy some iodine (I have the Logol’s Iodine, 5%) and put it on your skin. (I do my upper arm so people think it’s a tattoo, POSSIBLY because I draw a huge HEART on myself with that little wand, therefore making me VERY cool 😎 ).  If that orange stuff is still there in 48 hours, you’re fine.  If it’s not, you need to up your iodine intake.  “WHY?”, you ask?
