So first, let me start off by saying that I HATE myself for always becoming addicted to the most OBVIOUS ‘bad-food’ offenders! I think, “it won’t kill me if I eat it just once”, but once becomes finishing the entire jar within 10 minutes. So, I guess I got some splainin’ to do! With only 5 calories, NO FAT and just 1 little carb, you’d think this is an awesome choice! Right? I mean, why even read any further!? My instincts told me NOT to read the ingredients list and just leave well enough alone. So I followed that instinct. But once I realized I couldn’t stop at just a few tablespoons, I HAD to read what the magic was. The first 4 ingredients on the list are peppers, water, distilled vinegar and salt. So far, excellent! Then there’s Calcium Chloride, Natural Flavors, Xanthan Gum, Guar Gum, Sodium Benzoate and Sodium Metabisulfite. Huh? 😯
I know this is gross, but did you know that MSG, Aspartame and bugs in your food are all considered “natural flavors” and “natural colors”? How vile is that! And glutamates (MSG), animal products or allergens are often the source of “natural flavors”.
Anyway, back to that delicious jar of hot cherry peppers, once I practically polished off the jar (at very few calories and carbs and no fat, mind you) my head was pounding. It really ached. I knew there had to be MSG in there so I was not surprised to read “natural flavors”. Oh, and that ingredient “sodium benzoate” is also so unhealthy. When it is added to foods that contain vitamin C, a chemical reaction creates a small amount of benzene, which is a carcinogen. It’s so scary what goes into our food that otherwise tout low calorie, carb and fat counts. So deceiving! It’s like meeting someone REALLY hot and then realizing they’re REALLY dumb. 😉
And my latest find, also – SU-HU-HUX!! Jeff’s Naturals. I mean, NATURALS! These are seriously, AMAZING! Almost worth the MSG, for real. I love jalapenos mixed into anything and these are crazy delish! But why call it Jeff’s NATURALS when they add sh** to it that is far from natural? After mixing this into my tahini free hummus from Trader Joe’s (which ALSO lists “natural flavor” – SHOOT ME NOW!) and almost polishing THAT off….. You see where I’m going with this. Anyway, I’m done venting, for now.
What’s my point? READ LABELS! Eat crap in moderation, but KNOW what you’re eating and choose wisely. And lastly, sorry I’m writing infrequently lately. Summer’s SO getting to me (in a good way) and NOW I’m going out of town for a little bit.
